Farah Atassi,
Le Portique, espace d’art contemporain, Le Havre

Farah Atassi devotes her work to the vary basis of abstraction, raising questions about the issue of ornament. The five canvases on view at Le Portique borrow their motifs from the decorative arts. Wallpaper and carpets are the point of departure for the artist’s way of thinking, and, in this way, she reverts to the sources of art and makes imaginary new objects by assembling many different kinds of geometric forms. The theme of space is always readable in her new works, but the artist now deconstructs and re-arranges it by accumulating forms and encouraging their encounter on canvas, in such a way as to depict and re-invent an ornament. Farah Atassi thus goes on challenging art and its codes, and its methods of representation.
