Christian Jaccard
Feux sacrés
Musée-château d’Annecy

The exhibition Feux sacrés [Sacred Fires], mixing contemporary art and mediaeval art, offers reflection on the notions of sacredness, rituals, and worship of the figure of St. Anthony, healer of those afflicted by “St. Anthony’s fire”, who was especially venerated in the Alps in the 15th century, linked with the work of Christian Jaccard, an artist involved in combustion processes who produces pyrogenic and supranodal works. Mediaeval illuminations, sculptures and paintings recount the story of St. Anthony, the journey made by his remains from the Orient to the West, and the success of his devotion associated
with the rigours of the times, and offer rich illustrative material. Christian Jaccard’s work (slash-and-burn sculptures and pictures) 1 take a contemporary look at the sacred, developing in spectators a very physical approach to the work in the proliferation of knots together with the emancipation of flames and their connections to this notion.
