The exhibition deals with paint’s tendency to escape from the picture frame and spill over onto the wall, as well as in front of the canvas, and sometimes even spread over the whole venue. There is nothing new about this, of course. El Lissitzky, an architect by training, regarded his pictures as “stations of liaison between painting and architecture”… The whole history of painting seems caught in a twofold movement of emancipation from the wall (the wall of the cave, the chapel or the palace), in order to make for itself an autonomous space in the picture-object, and a return towards paint(ing)’s greater porousness with regard to its environment. Olivier Delavallade.
