African Way: Barthélémy Toguo, Frédéric Bruly Bouabré, Mounir Fatmi, Najia Mehadji,
Yazid Oulab, Chéri Samba, Malick Sidibé, Pascale Marthine Tayou
Chapelle de la Visitation, Espace d’art contemporain, Thonon-les-Bains

As the last exhibition of the 2013-2014 season, African Way is part of one of the four themes on which three years of the Chapelle de la Visitation programme have been based—here, namely “Nomadism/Globalism”. This show offers a chance to go and meet the work of artists who belong to one of the most dynamic art scenes there is, Africa. If western artists have long borrowed their models and their modes of expression from African art, two cult exhibitions—Magiciens de la terre (1989) and Africa Remix (2004)—brought the wealth of inventiveness of many contemporary artists in the African continent to the forefront of international artistic activity. In the space of some thirty years, the African scene has thus become part of the networks and circuits of the contemporary art world.
