Semaine 35.13

Katinka Lampe, Wannabe
Galerie Les filles du calvaire, Paris

Katinka Lampe paints not so much portraits as faces, those of children and teenagers: ordinary faces which are beings of paint looming up from large colourful backgrounds.
Whether three-quarters, full-face, half-length, the gaze straight or hidden behind hair. Faces intrigue and want to have a dialogue with the viewer. In their own way, they all express the same wish with a certain feverishness: they want to become others. The English slang term ‘wannabe’ is used when “wanting to be” becomes stronger than any state, like a desperate quest aimed at something unattainable. lb
