By developing art partnerships, in particular by way of artistic and institutional commissions, and through joint productions, the Hôtel des Arts, the Art Centre run by the Var General Council, strives to cast a visual eye over contemporary issues. The city, the Mediterranean and territories lie at the heart of its concerns. So the exhibition Mappamundi—Art et Cartographie is a perfect meeting place between the “Ulysses” project and the art centre’s artistic line. As a material form of the world, an expression
of power and an object of dreams, cartography is a major symbolic challenge which artists have taken by storm. For this show, some thirty international contemporary artists invite us to take a new look at maps and cast a removed eye over them, which is turn by turn sensual, political and dreamlike.
